“Participation has become a call for us.
But what does it mean?.
We shall still have to give thought to this”.
Józef Tischner (1977c, p. 2).
Abstract
Józef Tischner’s role in co-shaping the social consciousness of Polish society was significant. His axiology based on phenomenological method concerned both an individual subject and a community. A big part of his reflections was dedicated to the community with which this priest-philosopher felt the special bond. This justifies the searching for connections between Tischner’s philosophical thought and sociological characteristics of the society which he felt responsible for. The article focuses on the period of the communist rule and the so-called socialist reality. Its first objective is to present Tischner’s creative reception of phenomenology, mainly Husserlian one, along with showing how it was specified by his place and time. The other objective of the article is to show how circumstances of living under the communist regime influenced social attitudes and made Poles retentive of Tischner’s thought.

Notes
Polish verb ‘wymyślać’ has these two meanings.
Of course, if we alleged that the state of consciousness of Polish society members throughout the period of communism was unvarying we would be denying facts, and in addition, the crucial assumptions that Józef Tischner followed. Nonetheless, it is impossible in this article to undertake the task of showing evolution (sometimes fluctuations) of social moods, self-knowledge, social views and attitudes during the communist times.
It is a title of Czesław Miłosz’s book written in 1953, describing the seduction mechanisms which plagued Polish intellectuals under Stalinism.
The yearning for authenticity found expression in a variety of fields. For instance, a song with a refrain repeating: “Chcemy być sobą” [“We want to be ourselves”], recorded by the Polish rock band “Perfect” in 1981 was sung with the audience at each concert of the group throughout the 1980s. The most famous Zbigniew Herbert’s poem was “Przesłanie Pana Cogito”(“The Envoy of Mr. Cogito”, transl. Bogdana Carpenter) with its last words: “Be faithful Go.” It is recognised that Herbert's series of poems was a part of social consciousness of those times. As Anna Nasiłowska (1988) emphasises, Mr. Cogito as an intellectual does not negate “the definition of man as animal rationale, but this must be supplemented by adding the concept of the ethical subject” (p. 25). This ethics “requires courage, sacrifice, and loyalty to the way which you can barely see. It allows you only to see that you belong to the hoi polloi who live now as well as to the past generations” (p. 27).
The essence of Polish variant of amoral familism was seen in the limitation of moral behaviours to the realm of privacy. On the other hand, the meaning and the capacity of the private sphere is moulded by historical tradition and varies from society to society. In Poland a part played by the private sphere grew each time when possibility of performing important functions in the field of public institutions decreased. One of the arguments against the thesis of amoral familism is that in the private realm the matters of much wider community were discussed, including a lot of political topics.
For instance, owners of private cars spontaneously offered a lift to non-motorised strangers waiting for highly unreliable public transport (the example comes from the author's personal observations and experiences).
This distinction applies a different understanding of ‘crisis.’ In this case, crisis has a potential of change or breakthrough and therefore of hope.
Jan Patočka should be recalled here, a very influential figure in Czechoslovakia. In his variant of phenomenology, the axiological dimension is the basic feature of the world, and a subject is put in situations that require a heroic attitude. Patočka asserts that “this world of life is a world of good and evil, and subjectivity is the subjectivity of the drama of good and evil” (1987, p. 155).
