원효와 화이트헤드사상의 접점에 관한 비교연구

이 논문은 한국불교 스님인 원효와 서양의 유기체 철학자 화이트헤드사상의 접점을 비교 연구한 것이다. 특히 이 논문은 원효의 일심철학과 화이트헤드의 유기체철학을 비교 연구한 것이다. 이 논문은 원효와 화이트헤드의 존재론의 근간을 이루는 일심과 현실적 존재, 관계론의 핵심이 되는 연기와 과정, 종교론의 중심이 되는 불과 신의 유사성을 검토하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 우선, 이 두 사유체계는 연기와 과정을 기반으로 실체적 사고를 비판한다는 면에서 유사하다. 다음으로 원효와 화이트헤드는 전통철학에서 궁극적 근거로 제시하는 제1실체나 신 혹은 아트만을 부정하면서 자신들의 비실체철학에 맞게 새로운 궁극적 존재를 제시한다. 궁극적 존재를 원효는 일심이라 하고 화이트헤드는 현실적 존재라 한다. 다음으로 이러한 궁극적 존재인 일심이나 현실적 존재가 존재하기 위해서 다른 존재를 필요로 하지 않는 절대적 존재가 아니라 모든 것은 다른 어떤 것과의 관계에서만 존재하는 의존적․연기적․과정적 존재라는 점에서 두 사유체계는 공통의 접점이 있다. 마지막으로 종교론에서 가장 중요한 개념은 절대적 존재이다. 두 사상가 모두 숭고한 존재로서 불과 신을 인정한다. 그러나 전통종교에서 말하는 전지전능하고 불멸이며 절대적인 존재로서의 불이나 신을 인정하지 않는다. 원효는 불을 오히려 일심의 한 양상으로 파악하며 화이트헤드는 신도 하나의 현실적 존재에 지나지 않는다고 파악한다는 점에서 공통적이다.

This paper is a comparative study of the contacts between Wonhyo, a Korean Buddhist monk, and Whitehead thought, an organic philosopher of the West. In particular, this paper is a comparative study of Wonhyo’s philosophy of unity and Whitehead’s philosophy of organism. The purpose of this paper is to examine the similarity between fire and whitehead, which is the core of the ontology of reality, the act and process which is the core of the relationship, and the similarity between fire and god, which is the center of religion. These two thought systems are similar in that they criticize substantive thinking based on acting and process. First, these two thought systems are similar in that they criticize substantive thinking based on dependent origination and process. Next, Wonhyo and Whitehead deny the first substance, God or Atman, which is presented as the ultimate basis in traditional philosophy, and present a new ultimate existence in accordance with their non-reality philosophy. The ultimate existence Wonhyo is One mind and Whitehead is Actual entity. Next, in order that existence of this ultimate existence, One mind or Actual entity, is not an absolute existence that does not require another existence, but that everything is a dependent, process existence existing only in relation to another. Finally, the most important concept in religion is absolute existence. Both thinkers acknowledge Buddha and God as noble beings. However, it does not recognize Buddha or God as an omnipotent, immortal, absolute being in traditional religion. Wonhyo sees Buddha as an aspect of unity and Whitehead is common in that it sees that God is only one real existence.
