이 글은 잠과 자본주의의 상관성에 대한 이론에 토대하여 『도시의 흉년』의 잠 모티프를 분석함으로써 근대화 과정에서 가치절하되어 온 잠의 계보를 추적하고 근대가 표방하는 생산성 담론 바깥으로 나아갈 수 있는 가능성을 모색한다.
먼저, 발전담론의 타자이자 균열의 징후인 엄마의 잠에 주목하여 엄마가 대리하는 당대의 발전주의를 비판적으로 조명한다. 엄마가 주도하는 가정이 표상하는 속도와 광기는 돈의 위력과 발전 이데올로기에 강박된 일상을 함축하며 잠의 배제와 비가시화는 이와 연동됨을 확인한다. 동시에, 계층이동의 조급한 욕망에 의해 타자화되는 바로 그 지점에서 잠은 발전담론을 균열하는 징후로서 자리한다는 사실을 밝힌다. 중산층으로 남지 못했고 가정마저 와해된 실패와 함께 처단된 엄마의 잠과 퇴행은 개인의 실패를 넘어 발전담론의 한계를 폭로하고 고발하는 역할을 하는 것이다.
다음으로, 수연남매를 비롯한 차세대 인물들에게 잠 모티브는 자주 반복되며 삶의 중요한 계기로 수용된다는 사실에 주목하여 발전담론에 대한 잠의 척력과 그 대안적 가능성을 탐색한다.
수연 세대에게 반복되는 잠 모티프는 본능을 넘어, 엄마 혹은 엄마가 대리하는 당대 자본주의의 게걸스러움에 대한 모욕이자 저항 역할을 하며 이들이 지배담론에 맞서 자율성과 자립을 획득하게 하는 계기임을 확인한다. 나아가 이들의 잠이 저항의 계기를 넘어 대안적 삶의 가능성을 함축하는 과정을 밝힌다. 인간의 통제하에 놓인 도구이거나 잉여가 아니라 배후에서 인간을 움직이는 심급에 자리하는 잠에 주목함으로써, 잠에 내장된 자연적 주기성과 물러남, 그리고 성찰성의 힘을 복원하고 이를 통해 대안적 근대의 잠재력을 제시한다.

Based on the theoretical approach on the close relationship of sleep and capitalism, this article analyzes the sleep motif that appears in Park Wan-seo’s Bad Years of the City, to trace the genealogy of sleep that has been under-valued in the course of modernization and to explore the possibility of moving further over the productivity discourse.
The article, firstly, analyzes patterns that myth of wealth and development in modern society make sleep invisible, and reactions that the everyday lives are colonized by sleep, focusing on the position of “mother” who represents growth-oriented mentality.
The family led by a mother, who succeeded in becoming the middle class by making some fortune to her family, is represented by madness and polish. The kitchen is a place of uninterrupted madness to advance and growth, and the living room is highlighted as a place of gloss for showing off. Such growth-oriented and exhibitionist desire is closely related to non-visualization of sleep, which, in reverse, results in colonization of everyday lives by sleep. This article tries to can look at the account of sleep, in which the non-visualization of sleep leads to the transfer of sovereignty. Through the process of non-visualization of sleep, the modern motto of wealth and development reveals a kind of myth.
Next, it is noted that the generation of her daughter, Suyeon carries out the alternative imagination of resistance against productivity discourse, which leads to notice that sleep is located at the forefront of neutralizing the myth of money. To the Suyeon’s generation, sleep motif is some resistance and attack to the greediness of capitalism of her mother’s day.
These findings prove that they have some opportunities to gain autonomy and self-reliance against the dominant ideology of productivity and growth. Furthermore, this article reveals how their sleep goes beyond the momentum of resistance and promotes the possibility of an alternative life. This article posed that sleep is not a tool nor any surplus placed under human control, but a subject that can make some salient affect on human lives, and based on such findings, this article can advance to the gateway for restoring the forces of natural periodicity and reflectivity, and thus reveal the potential of alternative modernity.
