Eine historische Einordnung des new criticism wird z.B. versucht von John Henry Raleigh, The New Criticism as an Historical Phenomenon, CL, XI, 1959, S. 21–28. Der new criticism wird dabei von seiner Ausgangsbasis in Eliot und Richards her beurteilt, nicht in seiner Entwicklung berücksichtigt, die sich, wie unsere Untersuchung zeigen soll, in der Auflösung anfänglicher Paradoxa aufweisen läßt, die Raleigh als charakteristisch für die Bewegung als solche betrachtet.
