  • Chapter
Health, Disease, and Causal Explanations in Medicine

Part of the book series: Philosophy and Medicine ((PHME,volume 16))

Abstract

The mortality statistics, which are an important source for medical research, are prepared in many countries according to regulations and recommendations issued from the World Health Organization (WHO) in the current revision of the Manual of the International Statistical Classification of Diseases, Injuries, and Causes of Death (ICD). These statistics are generally based on one cause only per death, and the way to select this cause is determined by WHO through certain rules in the ICD.
