Abstract

The project for cataloguing manuscripts from the Universitäts- und Landesbibliothek Düsseldorf focusses on theological and hagiographic manuscripts from the shelfmark groups B and C. During work on the theological manuscripts (group B), a number of vernacular manuscripts were described whose language had been regarded as Middle Dutch in the earlier scholarly literature. However, terminological problems were encountered during the linguistic analysis of the texts contained in the manuscripts. On the basis of modern linguistic research, it has been possible to identify the texts as documents from the cultural and linguistic area of the Rhine-Maas region and, in some cases, as literary works produced there. Further examples were found during work on the hagiographical manuscripts (group C) which is still in progress. As a result of codicological and palaeographical analysis, the manuscripts can be dated and localised and the context of their production and reception can be described. This serves as a contribution both to regional linguistic studies and to literary history.
