이 논문은 롤즈의 정치적 자유주의에 대한 무페의 비판을 다룬다. 이를 위해서 좋음에 대한 옳음의 우선성, 근대성 비판, 질서정연한 사회, 정치 없는 정치철학이라는 내용으로 롤즈의 정치적 자유주의를 검토할 것이다.
롤즈의 정치적 자유주의에 대한 무페의 비판을 다음과 같이 정리 할 수 있겠다. 롤즈의 정치적 자유주의는 정치적 정의관의 규범성을 강조하기 위해서 도덕적 언어와 정치적 언어를 구분하지 않고 도덕적 언어로 제시되었다. 둘째, 합당한 다원주의에서 강조하는 합당함은 자유민주주의 체제의 정치 이념을 존중하는 것으로 제한하기 때문에 다원주의를 반영하지 못한다. 셋째, 인격체로서 시민을 제시하지만 정치체제와 연결된 시민 개념이 없다. 넷째, 질서정연한 사회라는 개념은 근본적 불확실성에 있는 현대 사회를 반영하지 못한다. 다섯째, 정치와 구별되는 정치적인 것에 대한 논의가 없다. 이러한 비판을 통해 무페는 적대와 헤게모니 개념을 통해 새로운 해석을 제시한다. 합당한 다원주의가 아닌 경합적 다원주의, 적대를 정치적-윤리적 이념을 공유하면서 새로운 해석을 시도하는 경합적 관계로의 전환, 질서정연한 사회가 아닌 헤게모니 구성체, 제도적 질서로서의 정치가 아닌 인간 공존을 위한 실천과 관계하는 정치적인 것을 제시한다.
이 논문은 우리의 정치 현실이 법과 법의 집행을 통한 정치적 안정성에 우선순위를 두면서 정치의 역동성과 활발한 쟁론이 사라진 현실에서, 롤즈의 정치적 자유주의에 대한 무페의 급진적이고 경합적인 관점에서 비판하는 내용을 검토하는 것은 우리의 정치 현실을 바라보는데 시사점을 줄 것으로 기대한다. 필자는 이들의 논쟁을 통해 자유민주주의 상징적 틀 내에서 정치철학을 논하면서도 경합적이고 다원주의적인 정치철학을 통해, 역동적이고 새로운 경쟁적 해석이 가능한 정치를 모색하는 것이 필요하다는 것을 제시하고자 한다.

This paper deals with Mouffe’s Critiques of Rawls’ Political Liberalism. Rawls established a political philosophy by arguing for the ‘priority of right over good’, ‘reasonable pluralism’, ‘well ordered-society’, ‘individualism’, ‘public reason’, and ‘overlapping consensus’. This paper will review these contents.
Mouffe posits that Rawls’ Theory of Justice is in fact a mere extension of moral philosophy. Rawls does not make a distinction between moral discourse and political discourse, so his theory of justice is moral reasoning applied emphasizing the normativity treatment of the political conception of justice.
Mouffe criticizes Rawls’s liberalism as characterized through a rationalist and individualist approach as it can be harmful in the destruction of community values and of public life, thus concerning herself with ‘political antagonism’, ‘hegemony’s society’, and ‘agonistic pluralism’. In the sphere of political discourse, she distinguishes between ‘the political’ and ‘politics’. The political refers to this dimension of antagonism, and politics is affected by the domain of the political.
Mouffe’s agonistic pluralism energizes political philosophy and leads to a new interpretation of political philosophy, seeking an agonistic model of equal participation that can respect various identities of citizens and groups.
This paper criticizes Rawls"s political liberalism from Mouffe"s radical and competitive point of view in a reality where political dynamism and active debate have disappeared as our political reality prioritizes political stability through law and law enforcement. The review is expected to give implications for looking at our political reality. Through their debate, I would like to suggest that it is necessary to seek new dynamic and competitive politics through a competitive and pluralistic political philosophy while discussing political philosophy within the symbolic framework of liberal democracy.
