Summary
The 3-2 Austrian victory over the German team at the 1978 World Cup in Córdoba (Argentina) was not only a sports success for the Austrian people; it also became the key event shaping the collective memory of an entire generation. When Austria and Germany faced off again during the 2008 UEI;/\ European Championship, the media employed various semantic reproduction mechanisms that created fluid boundaries between past and present. The purpose of this paper is, on the one hand, to analyze how the 1978 event was reactualized in the German-speaking press during the 2008 UEFA European Championship. On the other hand, the paper examines the historical discourses around the Córdoba game as a marker of national identity. The study showed that since 1978, Córdoba has been understood as a “collective symbol” in Austria. Through the media’s use of narrative and symbolic elements - such as the stereotypical and emotional structure of reports or the focus on certain athletes from the 1978 game - the sports coverage provided a discursive framework that fundamentally defined the public perception of the 2008 UEFA Cup. Furthermore, these elements established the basis for various collective identification processes in the present.
