"Multimodality" can be understood differently in various contexts. "Multimodality", in the paper, refers to the cognitively synchronizing process of perceptual features and consciousness through the network of neural substrates. To put the process schematically, first of all, the diverse sense-data received from the external world are processed and stored by virtue of modular regions dispersed in the cortex. Namely, mental states are converted into neural states. Then, at some point later on, when the subject pays attention to a specific feature of musical performance, for the reason of the novelty or excellence of performance, some of the biologically stored modular data are converted to conscious states. That is, neural states are turned into mental states by the attentive consciousness of the subject, who is now fully engaged in constructing the imaginary, integrative, and abstract form of a specific piece of music. Musical ekphrasis may or may not play a part at this stage, depending on the focal points of the listener. Although the auditory experience of music is mainly dealt with in the paper , the multimodality thesis and its philosophical implications as to the issue of form in art can be expanded and applied to the arts other than music. For, above all, the multimodality thesis does not concern multi-mediality or collaborative art forms, but cognitive interaction between the sensory-motor brain modules and consciousness. The listener"s attentive consciousness restores and converts perceptual vestiges of various sorts stored in neural substrates, and engages itself in consctucting an abstract form of a work of music. Here, "abstract" only means that the form in art as the ultimate object of aesthetic experience is a state of consciousness, exemplifying itself as well as retaining perceptual resources. In a word, art and its object, irrespective of its specific medium, fundamentally multimodal. Secondly, multimodality of artistic form as a mode of consciousness is made possible by virtue of neural networking in the infra-personal level.
