본 논문에서는 소설 『토지』에 재현된 신여성(들)의 행보를 추적하여, 그 의미망을 고찰하고자 한다. 식민지근대의 신여성의 자리는 근대-식민-자본-남성이 착종되면서 온갖 모순적 경험들이 응축되는 곳이다. 최씨 가문의 윤씨부인-별당아씨-최서희로 이어지는 서사와는 또 다른 자리에 위치한 신여성 서사는 역사적 격변기 남성중심주의 『토지』의 대서사에 수렴되지 못하는 하위주체의 경험 지평을 담아내고 있다. 특히 소설 속의 신여성들이 가부장적 질서 안에서 자신들의 공간을 만들어 나가는 과정에서 반복하는 성공과 실패의 변주는, 가부장제 안의 소문과 편견을 뚫고 자신의 위치를 정립해가는 신여성의 주체화 과정으로 읽을 수 있다. 이러한 경험적 주체들의 행보를 추적하여 그녀들의 경험을 재구성하고 의미화하는 작업은 『토지』의 해석적 지평을 확장시켜 나가는데 기여할 수 있다.

In this paper, we try to trace the meaning of the new women reproduced in the novel Toji and consider its meaning. Unlike the narratives of the women in the periphery of Hadong-Gando, the narratives of the neo-liberals, which have been brought into full swing since the third part of Toji have crossed the narrative of men in the midst of the centered hardship of the colony-patriarch. Unlike the genealogy of the third generation woman Choi, the new narrative narrates the experiences of subordinate subjects that can not converge on the epic of the historical upheaval male centrism Toji. Especially, the place of the new woman of colonial modernity is the place where all kinds of contradictory experiences entanglemented as modern-colonial-capital-men are aggregated. The narrative of repetitive successes and failures in the process of making novels in the patriarchal order reveals the process of subjectification of the new person who breaks through rumors and prejudices in patriarchy. The work of reconstructing and semantizing the experiences of these empirical subjects can contribute to expanding the analytic horizon of Toji.
