Semiotic Excess, Semantic Vacuity and the Photograph of the Imaginary The Interplay of Realism and the Fantastic in Kafka’s Die Verwandlung

Zusammenfassung

The article describes Kafka’s poetics of representation in The Metamorphosis in terms of an interaction between the modes of realism and the fantastic. The “dialog” engendered by the confrontation of two mutually exclusive Systems of meaning serves to defer mimetic fixity and produces instead a series of indeterminate semantic vacuums. These point to an excluded significance not otherwise “representable” in conventional realist modes.

Abstract

Kafka’s Darstellungspoetik in Die Verwandlung wird hier als Interaktion zwischen zwei Modalitäten beschrieben: zwischen Realismus und der Tradition der fantastischen Literatur. Die dialogische Beziehung der beiden sich gegenseitig ausschließenden semantischen Systeme schiebt die mimetische Bestimmtheit auf und produziert eine Reihe von Leerstellen, die auf eine ausgeschlossene und anders nicht “darstellbare” Bedeutung hinweist.
