Specialist in medieval history, Neretina worked in the mid-sixties with Mikhail Gefter in his sector ‘Methodology of History’ of the Institute of History, before it was definitively disbanded in the early seventies. The sector had brought together historians and philosophers (notably V. S. Bibler, A. S. Arsen'ev, Lydia Tumanova) from the sector ‘Logic and Methodology of Science’ (directed by N. I. Rodnij) of the Institute of the Natural Sciences and Technology to work on problems of culture. Neretina is also one of the core members of V. S. Bibler's ‘home’ seminar, which since 1964 has met on a regular basis to work on the theory of the ‘logic of dialogues’, and its application to the reading of the history of philosophy through dialogue.
