Liberalism is in retreat across the globe. The Chinese government has openly opposed the introduction of liberal freedoms. The Arab Spring has for the most part failed to establish liberal democratic structures in North Africa and the Middle East, and the prospects for the success of U.S. attempts at maintaining such structures in Afghanistan and Iraq are precarious at best.
