Neil A Patrick and Sandra L Russo served on the Mixed Farming and Resource Management Project in The Gambia from 1983–1986. The purpose of the project was to "foster intensification and integration of crop and livestock enterprises within existing Gambian farming systems." In this report, the authors discuss some of the project's divergent goals that lower its chances of acceptance by farmers. They propose a framework for evaluating the design of projects, using acceptability by farmers as a criterion.
Neil A. Patrick received his Ph.D. in Agricultural Economics from lowa State University and has been employed as a teacher and researcher at New Mexico State University. He has recently served on agricultural development projects in Egypt, Sudan, and The Gambia. He is currently working in Swaziland on the Cropping Systems research and Extension Training Project.
Sandra L. Russo received her Ph.D. in Agronomy from the University of Florida and has been employed as a forage agronomist and livestock specialist in Kenya, Malawi, Senegal, Togo, and The Gambia. She is an Assistant Research Scientist in the Animal Science Department at the University of Florida
