Introduction to Bologna's “Class Composition and Theory of the Party”

Abstract

That the ‘60's have brought about major theoretical developments in European Marxist thought is well-known. Yet, with the exception of some “new working class” notions and sporadic translations of documents, there has been very little discussion of the specific positions of even the most advanced extra-parliamentary leftist groups. Starting with this issue, Telos will publish, with extensive commentary, some of what we consider the most significant theoretical works by the Italian extra-parliamentary left in an effort to assess their import for whatever remains of the American New Left. Bologna's essay, along with the work of the Potere Operaio group in general, is particularly relevant to us since it unambiguously points to the U.S. as “where it's at” with the class-struggle, and develops an analysis which relegates events in Western Europe and elsewhere as peripheral and provincial footnotes to the U.S. experience.
