Announcements A MONUMENTAL HISTORY We have received from the American agent (Herbert Reichner, Stockbridge, Mass.) a booklet describing a most impressive Italian publication by the publisher, Garzanti. It is a history of philosophical and scientific thought, Storia del pensiero filosofico e scientifico, in six large, handsomely bound volumes, containing 4,500 pages and 1,200 illustrations (including 150 color plates). The price is $122. This publication is the fruit of long years of work by Ludovico Geymonat and his twelve associates, all of whom have contributed specialized chapters; they have produced a reference work that is part history, part encyclopedia, part bibliography, and part reproduction of works of art. Each volume opens with a description of the cultural environment and scientific contexts in which philosophical thought developed; the general aim of the work is to break down the traditional separation of cultural, scientific, and philosophic histories. Vol. I: Ancient and Medieval gives an account of the mathematical and natural sciences before Parmenides as well as after Aristotle. It ends with the development of biological and medical sciences at the time of Galen, and the growth of these sciences in the Arabic cultures. It includes an account of Hebraic thought in its relations to Christian patristics.
