The European Peace Movements, The Soviet Union, and the American Left

Abstract

For more than a year Telos has been having a lively debate on the European and especially the West German peace movement To follow this discussion from a German vantagepoint is interesting in several respects. First, the question arises whether the socalled “peace movement” can be perceived from a distance. Which aspects are stressed, which are neglected? Most Telos-articles discussed the contents and forms of expression of these movements from the left and from the right, in distanced and at times polemical form. What are the aims of this criticism? Since Telos is an organ of internal Left debates or at least of a spectrum thereof: from what standpoints is the critique undertaken, and to what extent is it “Leftist” in the West-European sense?
