Additional information

Jeremy Shearmur was educated at the London School of Economics where he also worked as Assistant to Professor Sir Karl Popper. He subsequently taught philosophy at the University of Edinburgh, political theory at the University of Manchester, was Director of Studies at the Centre for Policy Studies in London, and was a Senior Research Fellow and Research Associate Professor at the Institute for Humane Studies, George Mason University. He is currently a Reader in Philosophy in the Faculty of Arts, Australian National University, where he has also taught Political Science. Shearmur is the author of The Political Thought of Karl Popper and Hayek and After (both London & New York: Routledge, 1996), editor (with David Gordon) to H. B. Acton’s The Morals of Markets and Related Essays, Indianapolis: Liberty Fund, 1993. He is currently completing Living with Markets and has plans for a book furthering the issues explored in the present article.

This is a revised version of a paper published in a Romanian journal Polis, Vol. 6, No. 2, 1999, pp. 67–82. It draws in part upon ideas that were explored in a lecture at the Institute of Economic Affairs, London, in 1998, and in my course on “Organizations and Knowledge” in the Department of Political Science, Faculty of Arts, at the ANU in 1999. I would like to thank participants in these for their discussion, upon which I have drawn in this article. In respect of the revision, I would like to thank the editor of this journal, and its referees, for some useful comments and suggestions. The article is a preliminary exploration of these issues and I welcome contact from those interested in this broad approach, in either a theoretical or a practical context. I can be contacted at: shearmur@ozemail.com.au
