Abstract
Taking its cue from modern discussions in the history of religions about religious education, the paper enquires into media of religious education in late antique philosophical paganism. It focuses on two Neoplatonic lives of Pythagoras, enquiring to what extent they can be regarded as media of religious education in a situation of increasing confrontation with Christianity. Even if Neoplatonism can be regarded as one of the most clearly contoured spheres of late antique paganism, transmitting a specific worldview, theology and anthropology, the results show the variety and individualism of this milieu: while for Porphyry Pythagoras is merely a philosopher from the distant past, Iamblichus employs him to illustrate and communicate a way of life which combines philosophical enquiry and self-discipline with the practice of traditional religion.
