God’s own country – God’s own politics?

  • Christiane Tietz

Abstract

The last election campaign for the presidency of the United States was characterized by a close connection between politics and Christian faith. This was the case not only on the right side of the political and religious spectrum. References to the Christian faith, of course, were very obvious there. But also the left side endeavoured to use Christian language and claimed a religious foundation of the “left” values.

One reason for this presence of religion in politics is the history of the United States which from the very beginning was determined by the aim to build a Christian society. The later separation of state and church in the American Constitution did not cause a separation of religion and politics. Civil Religion has always been an important source of national identity. Now, a politicized religion divides the nation and American Christianity. What is the most questionable thing here is the claim for representing “God’s own politics”.
