11세기에 중세 유럽에 거대한 변화가 일어난다. 바로 중세 도시의 출현이다. 시민들은 봉건영주의 간섭과 지배에서 벗어나 더 많은 자유를 확보하고, 도시를 스스로 통치하는 자치권을 실현하려는 운동을 전개한다. 이 운동의 결과로 자치권을 획득한 도시들을 ‘코뮌’이라고 불렀다. 중세 코뮌은 내부적으로 크게 길드와 평의회로 구성된다. 길드는 상공인들이 자신들의 권리를 공동으로 수호하기 위해 자유로운 의지로 결성한 단체였다. 평의회는 시민들이 도시의 공적인 통치를 위해 만든 민주적인 도시정부였다. 칼 맑스는 코뮤니즘의 사회정치적인 원리를 “자유로운 개인들의 자유로운 연합”으로 정식화하였다. 그는 1871년 수립된 파리 코뮌을 이 자개자연이 구체화된 국가형태로 보았고, 레닌은 이를 부르주아 국가기구를 대체할 소비에트 국가로 받아들였다. 중세 코뮌이 자개자연에 의해 구성된 최초의 (도시)국가로서 코뮤니즘의 역사적 기원이라 할 수 있다. 중세 코뮌은 단지 코뮤니즘의 기원만이 아니라 더 근본적으로 현대사회의 원형이다. 중세 코뮌은 모든 사람이 자유로운 새로운 역사적 시대가 열린 것이다. 중세 시민은 모든 예속에서 해방된 자유로운 개인으로, “새로운 인류”의 등장이다. 중세 코뮌은 도시의 역사 속에서 가장 결정적인 도시 혁명이다.

A grand change happened in the eleventh century in the medieval Europe. It was the emergence of medieval cities. Citizens successfully freed themselves from the feudal lords’s intervention and domination and achieved the freedom. The cities, which acquired the right for self-government, were called ‘Commune’. A medieval Commune was composed of the guild and council. A guild was a cooperation, which merchants and craftsmen freely organized in order to defend their own rights. A council was a democratic civic gevernment, which citizens elected for the purpose of public administration. Karl Marx had formulated the sociopolitical principle of the communism as “free association of free individuals”. He had seen the Paris Commune established in 1871 as a stateform, which incorporated this principle, and Lenin had declared the Paris Commune to be a soviet state, which would substitute the bourgeoisie state-apparatus. The medieval Commune was the first (city)state, which was based on the principle of “free association of free individuals” and therefore it can be regarded as the historical origin of the communism. The medieval Commune is not only the origin of the communism but also, more fundamentally the prototype of modern society. The medieval Kommune was the opening of a new historical epoch, in which every human being was free. Medieval citizens were free individuals, who were emancipated from every subordination. It was the emergence of the “homines novi”. The medieval Commune was the most significant urban revolution in the history of the City.
