플라톤 대화편에서는 엘렌코스, 가정의 방법, 그리고 나눔과 모음의 방법 등 다양한 철학적 탐구 방법이 사용된다. 기존 연구는 각각의 방법들이 서로가 서로를 대치한다고 보는 해석과, 각 방법들은 서로 긴밀하게 연결되어 발전한다는 해석으로 나뉜다. 이 논문에서는 플라톤의 철학적 탐구 방법이 하나로 통일되어 사용되면서 대상에 대한 위계적인 지식 뿐 아니라 네트워크적인 지식까지도 얻을 수 있게 하는 탐구 방법이라는 사실을 보인다. 이를 위해 『필레보스』 후반에서 지식의 종류를 나누는 과정을 분석하여 지식의 종류를 구분하여, 산술과 같이 다양한 영역에 걸쳐있는 지식의 성격을 드러낼 수 있는 나눔과 모음의 방법의 특징을 검토한다. 결론적으로 대상에 대한 지식을 갖지 않은 대화자들 사이에서도 지식을 획득할 수 있게 해주는 이상적인 탐구 방법으로서의 나눔과 모음의 방법이 󰡔필레보스󰡕에서 사용되었다고 주장한다.

This paper argues that the method in the Philebus, that is, the method of division and collection, is an ideal method for Plato’s philosophy. This paper begins with a critical assessment of previous researches: on the one hand, different methods in Plato’s dialogues are not related to each other, but replaced with each other in turn; on the other hand, these philosophical methods in Plato’s dialogues are integrated into one method, as the method of division and collection. I maintain that elenchus and its advanced form, i.e., the method of hypothesis, are incorporated into the method of division and collection in the Philebus, and therefore, that this method enables philosophical inquirers to acquire the complete structure of knowledge.
As a philosophical investigation between two ignorant men, an advanced form of Socratic method, namely, the method of hypothesis, helps pursuers of knowledge posit something in order to begin their investigations. The method of division and collection lets them continue their philosophical pursuits upward and downward so that they can grasp the whole hierarchical as well as web-like network structure of the subject. Finally, considering the example of productive knowledge in the Philebus, this paper shows how elenchus works at every joint of the division and collection.
