Abstract

The above prefatory note may serve as a prelude to our examination of Franz Brentano. It will echo throughout our discussion of the concept of intentionality; and indeed, the climax of our study will exhibit some affinity with Kant's cryptic remark. In this paper I shall first of all attempt to present Brentano's logic of intention. The presentation will not by any means be a complete discussion of Brentano's theory of phenomena. The theory will only be brought into the discussion at times when it will be beneficial for purposes of clarification of “intention.” At the beginning, the exposition of Brentano's concept of intention will be outlined only, so that we may have his concept available for critical review and appraisal later.
