『주관주의와 직관』은 박희성의 1937년 미국 미시건 대학교 철학박사 학위논문이다. 여기서 박희성은 지식의 기초가 되는 객관적 경험이 결국 유기적 전체로 이해되는 일원주의 우주론 아래에서만 가능하다는 논리를 펼친다. 이를 위해 박희성은 세 가지 가정, 첫째, 외부세계가 존재하며, 둘째, 세계는 하나이며, 셋째, 우리의 자아는 실재할 뿐만 아니라 적법하게 작동한다는 가정을 제시하고 정당화한다. 세 가정을 기초로, 박희성은 세계 속의 존재인 `나`가 모두가 서로 내재적 관계를 지니는 세계 속의 사건 및 세계 자체를 어떻게 객관적으로 경험할 수 있는지에 대해 설명한다. 특히 지각적 경험을 넘어서는 형이상학적 경험의 구체적인 사례로 시인의 명상이나 신비주의자의 비젼을 제시하며 이러한 경험이 객관적일 수 있다고 주장한다. 박희성이 인식론의 형이상학적 기초를 구축하고자 시도한 이러한 논의는 자아, 직관, 내재적 관계, 형이상학적 경험, 그리고 일원주의 우주론 등의 개념을 중심으로 독창적이고 설득력 있게 이끌어간 철학적 작업으로 평가할 수 있다.

Subjectivism and Intuition is Prof. Hisung Pak`s 1937`s Ph. D. dissertation of the University of Michigan. In this dissertation, Prof. Pak aims to develop the idea that objective experience is possible only when we have the monistic view of the universe. For this, Prof. Pak presents and defends the following three assumptions; first, the external world exists, second, the world is ultimately one, third, the self is assumed in all our activity. Prof. Pak explains how `I` can experience the events in the world and the world itself objectively when `I` have internal relations with the events in the world and the world itself. Prof. Pak argues that metaphysical experience can also be objective in addition to perceptual experience. He presents poet`s contemplation and mystic`s vision as concrete examples of metaphysical experience. Prof. Pak`s purpose to establish a metaphysical foundation to epistemology is creative and persuasive when he introduces and develops the concepts like self, intuition, internal relation, metaphysical experience, and the monistic view of the universe.
