이 연구는 지난 이삼십년 동안 집중적으로 쏟아져 나온 뉴로 소설들이 신경 장애에 대하여 신경다양성 (운동)의 관점을 공유한다는 주장으로 논의를 출발한다. 이러한 전제와 더불어 뉴로 소설은 과학의 시대에 소설의 한계를 보여준다는 주장과는 달리, 오히려 과학지식을 빌려 인간에 대한 이해와 소설의 지평을 확대할 가능성을 보여주는 장르임을 강조하고 있다. 그리고 이 같은 견해를 세 장으로 나누어 피력하였다. 첫 장은 뉴로 소설의 출현과 이에 대한 비판을, 두 번째 장은 신경장애 담론의 ‘신경다양성’(운동)의 기원과 정의, 나아가 이 운동에 대한 의학계의 비판을, 마지막 장은 리처드 파워즈의 뉴로 소설, 에코 메이커의 카프그라 신경증후군과 관련된 논의를 중심으로, 뉴로 소설과 신경다양성이 만나는 지점을 모색하여 보았다.
소설 『에코 메이커』는 뇌 과학과 신경생물학 지식을 원용하여 카프그라 증후군과 인간의 의식과 자의식을 설명하지만 과학적 탐구 자체에 머무르지 않는다. 카프그라 증후군은 플롯을 이끌어가는 구심점이지만 이와 동시에 진실과의 대면을 회피하는 동시대 미국 사회의 불감증에 대한 은유이자 기표로 확장된다. 요컨대 소설의 주인공만이 신경 장애가 아니라 자기기만과 자기 보호 본능을 앞세워 진실을 기피하고 왜곡하는 등장인물들 모두 카프그라 증후군을 앓고 있는 것이라는 사실이 소설에서 암묵적으로, 은유적으로 드러난다. 그리하여 정상인과 장애인의 구별은 유효하지 않으며, 신경증후는 더 이상 정상과 비정상을 구별하는 잣대가 아님을 소설은 말해주고 있다. 이 같은 맥락에서 리처드 파워즈의 뉴로 소설은 사람의 타고난 가치와 배려의 윤리를 옹호하면서 신경 장애를 비정상이 아니라 사회의 일부로 수용하려는 신경다양성의 정의와 동일한 맥을 공유한다고 볼 수 있다.

This study starts with the observation that not a few neuronovels published for the last twenty years have shared their understanding of the neurologically disabled with the neurodiversity movement. Along with this premise, it stresses the possibility of neuronovels to extend the horizon of novel genre, contrary to those criticisms that neuronovels prove the limit of the novel genre in this scientific age. This contention is set forth through the three chapters. The first chapter deals with the emergence of neuronovels and their criticism. The second one summarizes the development and definition of neurodiversity movement and the criticism of medical circles against neurodiversity. Finally, the third chapter seeks the point where the imagination of neuronovels intersects the ideology of neurodiversity through the analysis of Capgras Syndrome represented in Richard Powers’ neuronovel, The Echo Maker.
The point of this study is that despite the various comments on neurobiology and brain science concerning Capgras Syndrome in the novel, the focus of The Echo Maker is not on neurological disorder. As the novel develops, Capgras Syndrome, pivot of the plot, extends itself as a metaphor and signifier of the contemporary American insensitivity. The novel implicates that not only Mark, the actual patient, but all the major characters who act out of self-delusion and the instinct of self-preservation are sufferers of Capgras Syndrome. Thus, the existing distinction between the normal and the disordered becomes invalid; neurological syndrome is unable to become a measure which distinguishes the abnormal from the normal. In this context, The Echo Maker enhances the ideology of neurodiversity movement which, advocating the inherent value of each individual and the ethics of care, embraces the neurologically diverse as the normal members of society.
