Abstract
Forgiveness... requires investigating the temporal structure of existence, intertwining memory, oblivion and openness to the future, keeping track of history and at the same time walking the path of mutual liberation. Precisely in this perspective, we must also address the link between forgiveness and punishment and between forgiveness and justice, questioning the ethical sense of a possible and paradoxical duty to forgive. The itinerary proposed here passes through the comparison with some of the most acute thinkers of the contemporary world such as Jankélévitch, Derrida, Arendt, Ricoeur, Guardini, but also with witnesses of history who have reflected, sometimes with diametrically different perspectives, on their own experience and on some of the tragic events of the twentieth century--Translated from front and back flaps of cover.
