On the Discussion of Translating the Buddhist Scriptures in Classical Chinese or Vernacular

Abstract

Translation of Buddhist scriptures not only play an important role in the spread of Buddhism, but also a surge of Chinese driving force behind the development of modern Chinese. Scriptures at the beginning of the text appeared in the so-called quality issues. Academic orientation of the view that the scriptures in general and quality of the text actually refers to the translation and the literal translation, that scriptures methods. Scriptures in the history of the dispute, although the quality of the text and translation, literal translation of a certain relationship, and its most critical upon is that the language of the text and white, to classical translation of the text is significant, as compared to vernacular translation quality. It is important to translate the Buddhist scriptures in Chinese not only for the Buddhism to disseminate but also for modem Chinese to develop. The discussions named text-quality issues which was actual the method of translation arose at the beginning of translating the Buddhist scriptures. In fact, the key of the discussion was in what kind of language to translate since it would be "wen" in classical Chinese, and "zhi" in vernacular language
