Abstract

This chapter examines the social learning effects of mass media, particularly television, on aggression. It analyses the results of surveys, correlational studies, and experimental studies which evaluated the influence of television violence on aggressive behaviour. The findings suggest that viewing televised aggression has a causal effect in increasing real-life violence. This chapter proposes several techniques for preventing the negative effects of television violence on the behaviour of the viewers including censorship and educational techniques.
