Abstract

Nunca como ahora los pacientes gravemente enfermos o con padecimientos incurables o crónicos, se han visto tan expuestos a organizaciones médicas sin escrúpulos que aprovechando su lógica incomodidad y su preocupación, prometen curas milagrosas y tratamientos haciéndose pagar enormes sumas de dinero por procedimientos sin ninguna garantía, ningún real beneficio y, peor aún, con graves riesgos para la salud. Este artículo discute algunos casos de pacientes que han pagado con su salud, con frecuencia irremediablemente, o en manera catastrófica, los efectos de terapias teóricamente avanzadas, con células estaminales, de algunos centros. Se hace referencia a diversos países que, en tiempos incluso no remotos, ofrecen y practican alguno de estos tratamientos, las más de la veces a través de estrategias de marketing directas y agresivas para los pacientes y sus familias mostrando reales o ficticios reportes relativos a otros pacientes, pero sin previos estudios científicos que avalen los resultados de los presuntos beneficios. En este artículo, discutimos algunas sugerencias útiles y líneas guía internacionales para reconocerlos y evitarlos.Además, hemos discutido a detalle las razones específicas por las cuales la mayor parte de los médicos y personal clínico, presentan dudas sobre la competencia y las razones éticas de estos centros y desaconsejan los viajes de este "turismo médico". Also, we discussed in detail the specific reasons why most doctors and clinics doubt about the competence and ethical reasons of these centers and discourage those "medical tourism" trips.
