  1. The Languages of the Law: An Integrated View From Vico and Conceptual Metaphor Theory. [REVIEW]Marcel Danesi - 2012 - International Journal for the Semiotics of Law - Revue Internationale de Sémiotique Juridique 25 (1):95-106.
Work on the relation between figurative language and the law is a fairly recent trend, within legal discourse studies, linguistics, and semiotics. The work in conceptual metaphor theory, for example, is starting to unpack the underlying metaphorical and metonymic structure of legal language, producing some new and important insights into the nature of this language. Missing from this emerging line of inquiry are the views of the Neapolitan philosopher Giambattista Vico, who was the first to understand the power of figurative (...)

  • The Humans, Society and Law.Kiyoung Kim - 2023 - Seoul: Kyobobook.

  • Anti-System in the Philosophical Practice of Francis Bacon.Robert Miner - 2023 - International Journal of Philosophical Studies 31 (2):115-135.
In this paper, I ask whether Francis Bacon constitutes a revealing exception to the modern predilection for ‘system.’ First, I consider evidence for reading Bacon as a philosopher strongly attracted toward the ideal of system. Second, I show how reflecting on Bacon’s philosophical practice can motivate an ‘anti- system‘ reading of his texts. In considering the small number of works in which Bacon explicitly discusses ‘system’ under that name (in particular, the Descriptio globi intellectualis), I clarify what is and is (...)

  • In Their Right Minds: The Lives and Shared Practices of Poetic Geniuses by Carol Brooks Platt.Michael Grosso - 2015 - Journal of Scientific Exploration 29 (4).
The author introduces her remarkable book with this remark: “My interest in the voices and visions of poets and prophets was precipitated by a dear friend’s claim to channel angels after her mother died.” How was it possible for her friend to undergo such a substantial change in her sense of reality? How could she accept angelic encounters as really real? Witnessing this transformation galvanized Carole Brooks Platt to do twenty years of research, the present book resulting. The book indeed (...)
