Monastic Hospices in Southern France and Colleges in Montpellier, Toulouse, Paris, and Oxford: The Cistercian Urban Presence
Abstract
Cistercian colleges in southern France had origins in hospices for traveling Cistercians. The hospices in Toulouse and Montpellier owe much to the generation of Bernard of Clairvaux , and as preaching against heresy became the province of new groups, hospices in Montpellier and Toulouse became colleges for training theologians. In Nîmes and Toulouse, events of the Albigensian Crusade coincided with a foundation or re-foundation. Colleges in Paris and Oxford may in contrast have begun as educational, but also chantry-like, institutions, with less emphasis on the specific training and housing of preachers against heresy. Papal initiative and in particular the role of Innocent IV was considerable.
