Abstract

This paper proposes to settle the apparently opposite concepts of equality and aristocracy, starting from two different meanings of equality. Equality can be intended either as overlapping of behaviours and opinions or as a common basis from which many distinctions can originate. If the former concept risks to generate totalitarianisms, the latter becomes the place where different identities can relate to each other and live together. The ‘equals’ in this sense correspond to the aristocrats , because they are the ones who consciously choose to govern their own life and to live in solidarity with other personal histories, respecting and sharing reciprocal differences
