Abstract

Natural questions related to the double category of rings with homomorphisms and bimodules lead to a reevaluation of what a morphism of rings is. We introduce matrix-valued homomorphisms and then drop preservation of identities, giving what are sometimes called amplification homomorphisms. We show how these give extensions of the double category of rings and give some arguments justifying their study.
