Abstract

Deals particularly with the musical world of Vienna. Pp. 84-95 chronicle the opposition of the Christian-Social Viennese newspaper "Deutsches Volksblatt" to the appointment of Gustav Mahler as director of the Viennese opera in 1897. This was part of a campaign against alleged Jewish domination of Austrian cultural life. The newspaper also protested every time Mahler chose to present a "Jewish" or other non-German work; but, in fact, Mahler himself favored German music, especially Wagner.
