The phenomenon of generation: features of the sociological conceptualization

Abstract

The article analyzes theoretization of generational issues in classical and contemporary sociological discourse, analyses the main methodological approaches that define vector of such research. An attempt is made explication of criteria for the selection of the generations through the prism of the objectivist and subjectivist sociology. Conceptualization of generation is carried out in the framework of structural-functional paradigm. Defining the theoretical model generation, the base is taken as a symbolic model. Special attention in defining symbolic model emphasizes community of contemporaries whose life coincided with a particular period of history, which is what causes the formation of entelechy of generation. It is concluded that generation habitualization determines the identity and self-perception of individuals through representation in the title of generation and objectivists in social practices and particular life style generation. Examines the processes of self-determination of generation communities through identifying markers that contribute to the institutionalization generation organization of society.
