Abstract

This short essay offers a critical assessment of André van der Braak's book, Nietzsche and Zen. The review outlines van der Braak's account of the state of comparative scholarship and then delves into the three main facets of van der Braak's linking of Nietzsche and Zen: the use of áskēsis, soteriological turns, and the notion of a “self” with regard to self-overcoming in both Nietzsche's works and the Zen tradition.
