Abstract

A frequência e fixação de estrangeiros em pólos mercantis portugueses justificaram, em alguns casos, a nomeação de representantes consulares no local. Neste artigo, que tem por base a realidade portuense setecentista, procurar-se-á dar um contributo para aclarar a importância da instituição consular, referindo nomeadamente as atribuições e características dos seus agentes e a valia das fontes notariais para o seu estudo.
