Abstract
The city as a subsystem of the social and spatial organization of modern society is considered in this article as a combination of public and social hierarchically organized space status and groups that are constantly reproduced through the process of social mobility. Particular attention is paid to the social space as a theoretical model of structuring society in which horizontal and vertical sections are selected, which consistency is determined by social institutions that rally aspirations, relationships, actions of individuals, which generally provide social stability of the society. Classical and modern sociological conceptual approaches to the study of problems of sociology cities that vary its mainstreaming issues are constantly analyzed. The regularities of formation and development of the cities through the prism of economic, socioeconomic, functional, ecological and sociological approaches are considered in the article. The basic directions of research concerning on factors transforming social space of the city were analyzed. One of the most important areas of the research is the study of stratified social space of the modern city, which belongs to a group, stratum or element segments and is defined by the presence of sociocultural potential, social prestige, political potential, the economic potential.
