Abstract

Research environment, also when pertaining to cultural studies, does not have a common and widely accepted definition of technology nor, at the same time, of graphic techne ; thus, there is no such definition of digital graphic technology either. That is why it has been decided to create the definition of the issue in this title. It was considered that the logic of digital graphic – just like any other cultural phenomena – can be understood better through referring to etymological determination. The ancient definition of techne referred, first of all, to the way humans acted and to their skills. It did not mention any tools, materials or processes that would make those acts of creation possible. At the same time, the etymological meaning of the term “graphic” highlights the presence of a technical element, as well as actions performed with a use of this element. As such, tools, materials and technical actions were, in some measure, a part of the definition of graphics. This is most likely the reason why graphics was so strongly integrated with technology and technical discoveries; it stimulated them and was stimulated by them. Today, graphics are integrated with computer sciences and electronics. Identifying these relations is crucial from the perspective of theoretical and applied research. The designed definition of digital graphics technology and, analogically, the phenomenon it describes will be tested iteratively in the next stages of the research. This procedure will allow for further, more detailed, elaboration and research correction.
