Abstract

This book contains essays and extracts from books written by M. Schröter between 1905 and 1964. Probably it was not easy for the author who wrote eight books, who edited besides the twelve volumes of Schelling’s Werke and published about fifty articles, to select his most significant contribution to philosophy. Being, at the time this book was compiled, ninety years of age, Schröter looks back on the development of his own philosophy from his early interest in Schelling until his current stand on philosophy of culture. The few changes made for this collection do not alter the fundamental content of any of the writings. The first six chapters, containing essays which are representative of Schröter’s Schelling interpretation, supply us with historical documentary details of high interest. Besides the historical material that is gathered and interpreted, the importance of these writings lies in the discussion of the relation between form and matter. The discussion of the mutual relation between form and content is also the main theme of those four essays which do not refer to Schelling. The first reference to this topic can be found in the writings of 1905/07: "Kulturphilosophische Ansätze."
