Abstract

Since antiquity, the relationship between education and the state, or pedagogy and politics, has been a central theme of educational and educational philosophy. Even today, different opinions on the relationship between pedagogics and politics and thus also that between civic education and democracy influence the discussion. This paper elaborates the relationship between civic education approaches and liberal and republican concepts of democracy and explores their respective educational goals. It then considers the design of civic education and sights empirical indications of its efficacy.
