Abstract

Knowledge of species richness is important for establishing priorities in conservation planning and management. Patterns of species richness in four exceptionally species-rich plant communities and correlations between species richness patterns, physical habitat, and historical biogeographic factors are examined here. I conclude that several of the apparently conflicting hypotheses for the maintenance of species richness in plant communities are reconcilable under different ecological circumstances.
