Abstract

Here and there, mathematical thinking leads us to infinity and thereafter to the so called mathematical inexhaustibility. Long periods of time had been invested by Western Culture in dealing with this “mathematical infinite” and the many mistakes and paradoxes that may appear around it. This article offers a survey of the multilayered concept of mathematical infinity. Moreover it describes how it appears and the astonishing fecundity of the results brought about by those appearances. Finally, the article offers a philosophical perspective of infinity in mathematics.
