On European Food Safety Governance

Abstract

European food safety governance and public health and consumer protection are closely related, has been widespread concern in the EU member states. 1990s food crisis caused consumer panic, the European Union in many areas of food safety reform, establishing the European Food Safety Authority, trying to develop a common supra-national level, unified food safety standards and regulation. This centralized management approach led to increased market concentration, Member States have taken appropriate measures to protect their small and medium enterprises in under strict food standards from the loss. European food safety governance related to the public health and consumer protection, is always widely concerned by the member states in European Union. European politicians made many reforms in the field of food safety and European Food Safety Agency had been established because the crisis of food safety brought consumers' scares in 1990s. They also tried to make food safety standards and unified control and regulation at the supranational level. The centralized management mode leads to the intensification of market concentration. The member states in EU take corresponding measures one after another to protect domestic middle and small scale enterprise from the loss under the strict regulation of food safety standards
