Abstract

The text translated here was originally published in the Revue de Métaphysique et de Morale in November 1899. It is one of the articles published by Alain, pseudonym used by Émile Chartier. The translation was performed by the Translation Group of the Department of Philosophy of the University of Brasilia, coordinated by Professor Philippe Lacour. The group proposes to regularly translate works of philosophy still unpublished in Portuguese and make them available in open access journals. The translation work is produced collaboratively through the digital platform TraduXio (https://traduxio.org/).
