Abstract

Theory and myth find their common basis in their contrasts to facts. This contrast sets them off as normative, atemporal and wholistic. They differ from one another in the ways that they are contrastive with facts. Theories are predictive where myths are performative; theories are transforming where myths are conforming; theories are about the world, myths are entered into as a way of living. Thus, theories are understandings about objects and events; myths are understandings that we participate in.
