From Marcos to Arroyo : what went wrong for democracy in the Philippines?

Abstract

This chapter will argue that neither the rationales advanced by advocates of the socialist left nor those advanced by advocates of the authoritarian right can serve as a key to assessing history or the promises the future holds. I will argue that the problem facing the Philippines in terms of both achieving democratic governance and attaining sustained economic prosperity lies in the long-standing failure to uphold the rule of law
