Abstract

The primary objective of this work is to illuminate the multi- faceted doctrine of Paticcasamuppada within the framework of early Buddhist soteriology. This is accomplished primarily by an analysis of the Suttas with ancillary clarification from the Abhidhamma. What we as Westerners have come to know of its early character represents a depiction provided either by later sects or scholars who do not comprehend the full scope of its dimensionality. This is unfortunate because, it is a doctrine at the core of Buddhism. ;Part of the challenge of this work is to integrate this doctrine within the fabric of Western civilization. This requires an examina- tion of the philosophical, psychological, and scientific matrix which comprises our modern outlook. It serves a number of useful purposes: it allows us to better understand the Buddhist doc- trine which stands out in relief, while at the same time; it points to the underlying unity of expression between seemingly divergent movements--thus promoting East-West understanding; and it establishes its contemporary relevance both as a practical guide to harmonious living, and as a diagnostic tool for actualizing human potential
