literature, knowledge and the aesthetic attitude attitude, deriving aesthetic pleasure from object ‐ tension, attitude deriving knowledge from it desire to appreciate aesthetically ‐ and desire of acquiring knowledge, two separate incompatible motives novels enacting, developing and exploring ‐ perennial human themes of love, death and ageing aesthetic interest and curiosity about life ‐ distinct motives aesthetic attitude, attention mode to object ‐ of sight, hearing and touch unwilled attention, not an action, not something one does ‐ but something which happens to one willed attention, holding one's attention on an object truth‐value of work's propositions ‐ prerequisite for treating it aesthetically What applies to experience of what has happened ‐ applying to experiences of what might or might have happened
