Abstract

Wallraff's thesis is that the descriptive results of phenomenological studies undertaken by psychologists studying perception should be of interest to the philosopher. They offer a decisive criticism of the theory of the sensory given as the completely accessible, determinate, and incorrigible foundation of empirical knowledge. Research has now revealed that "the only phenomena that we actually find--the sense qualia permeated with meanings which are constantly present to us--these are already infected with the fallibility of judgment." Wallraff would have us take perception as thus described as the paradigm of cognition--all cognition being incurably dependent upon conscious or unconscious frames of reference or interpretative schemes, among which are to be found the schemes of the metaphysician. --R. G. M.
